What's eating my 'lemon' cucumber?

Lemon cucumbers are tender and attractive to the same pests as standard slicing cucumbers. Cucumber beetles are the primary threat — they feed on leaves and flowers and transmit deadly bacterial wilt. Aphids, spider mites in hot spells, and slugs on young transplants also cause significant damage. Birds occasionally peck ripe fruits.

Chewed petals and leaves; more critically, transmits bacterial wilt (Erwinia tracheiphila) causing sudden whole-plant collapse. Use row covers until first female flowers open. Kaolin clay on foliage before beetles arrive. Remove and destroy wilted plants immediately to prevent spread.

Curled, yellowing leaves on shoot tips; sticky honeydew; colonies can crash the plant during fruit set when nutrient demand is high. Blast with water; apply insecticidal soap or neem oil. Reflective mulch confuses winged aphids. Avoid overhead irrigation which can spread virus-laden aphid honeydew.

Yellow stippling across leaf surface; webbing on undersides; severe infestations cause premature leaf drop and reduce fruit size in summer heat. Keep soil consistently moist — mites thrive in drought stress. Spray undersides with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Introduce Phytoseiulus persimilis predatory mites.

Ragged holes and slime trails on seedling leaves and on fruits resting on moist soil, particularly in wet UK conditions. Lay copper tape around raised beds. Set beer traps. Apply iron phosphate pellets (Ferramol/SlugGo — safe around pets and wildlife). Hand-pick at night.
