What's eating my large blue fescue?

Large blue fescue is largely pest-resistant but aphids and slugs occasionally attack new growth, while rust fungus can disfigure foliage. In established clumps, poor drainage and crown rot are bigger threats than insects. Rabbits and deer generally ignore this ornamental grass due to its fine, tough blades.

Clusters of small soft insects on new shoots; sticky honeydew residue and distorted tips. Blast off with a strong jet of water; apply insecticidal soap spray if colonies persist.

Ragged or shredded emerging leaf blades at ground level, especially after rain. Apply iron phosphate pellets around clumps; remove debris where slugs shelter.

Orange-brown pustules on leaf blades; heavy infection causes yellowing and dieback. Improve air circulation; cut back and dispose of infected foliage; avoid overhead watering.
