What's eating my sarracenia 'juthatip soper'?

Sarracenia 'Juthatip Soper', like other outdoor Sarracenia hybrids, is most commonly troubled by aphids on emerging pitchers in spring. Exyra moth caterpillars, slugs, and occasional scale insects round out the threat list. The hybrid's vigour gives some resilience but does not prevent these pests.

Soft-bodied colonies on new pitcher growth; distorted lids, honeydew deposits, and weakened plants if unchecked through spring. Wipe off manually or rinse with water; apply very dilute insecticidal soap to stems only, keeping it out of pitcher tubes.

Larvae bore into and consume pitcher walls from the inside; pitchers collapse with frass visible at the entry wound. Cut off and dispose of infected pitchers promptly. Spray remaining pitchers with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) solution in spring.

Ragged holes chewed through pitcher tubes and lids at night, particularly damaging to fresh spring growth. Hand-pick at night; use iron-phosphate slug bait around the container. Placing pots on gravel or staging can reduce access.
