What's eating my hoya blashernaezii?

Hoya blashernaezii is a Philippine hoya species kept as a houseplant. Mealybugs are the most common threat across the hoya genus and this species is no exception. Spider mites can colonise the leaf undersides in dry conditions. Inspect stem nodes and the backs of leaves each time you water.

Cottony white clusters at nodes and in leaf axils; honeydew promotes sooty mould and weakens the plant over time. Spot-treat with isopropyl alcohol, then apply neem oil or insecticidal soap to the whole plant on a weekly basis for a month.

Tiny pale flecks across the leaf surface and fine webbing beneath; foliage may yellow and feel dry. Increase humidity, rinse foliage under lukewarm water, and spray with insecticidal soap or neem oil every 5–7 days.

Brown waxy bumps on stems and leaf midribs; slow yellowing and dieback of affected branches. Remove mechanically with a soft brush and alcohol, then apply horticultural oil fortnightly until clear.
