What's eating my hosta sieboldiana 'elegans'?

Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans' has thick, blue-green leaves that offer slightly more slug resistance than thin-leaved types, but slugs still top the threat list. Deer will consume the whole plant if given access. Vine weevil grubs attack roots in pots. Foliar nematodes cause brown striping between veins in wet seasons.

Holes bored through the large leaves, especially on younger growth; thick leaves provide modest but not complete resistance. Iron-phosphate pellets; beer traps; gritty bark mulch as a deterrent; hand-pick in the evening.

Entire crowns and foliage consumed; 'Elegans' is just as attractive to deer as other hostas despite its bold size. Deer repellent spray; solid fencing; planting inside a courtyard or enclosed space.

Adults notch leaf edges at night; larvae devour roots in containers causing sudden plant collapse. Biological nematode drench in late summer; check pot compost for C-shaped white grubs when repotting.

Angular brown patches bounded by leaf veins; spreads rapidly in wet, humid conditions. Remove infected leaves; avoid wetting foliage; destroy (do not compost) affected material.
