What's eating my hope philodendron?

Philodendron 'Hope' (a Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum selection) is a large-leaved houseplant prone to spider mites in dry conditions and mealybugs in its deep leaf axils. Its deeply lobed leaves trap debris, so rinse it in a shower monthly. Scale can also take hold on stems if the plant is neglected.

Yellow stippling across the broad leaf surface; silky webbing in the lobes and undersides; worst in dry winter rooms. Shower the whole plant, apply neem oil or miticide spray to all surfaces weekly, and boost humidity to 55%+.

White cottony fluff hidden deep in the leaf axils and at stem junctions; honeydew and sooty mould on lower leaves. Probe deep axils with an alcohol-soaked swab; follow with systemic insecticidal soap spray every 7–10 days.

Brown waxy bumps on petioles and main stems; sticky secretions and yellowing of affected leaves. Scrape off with a toothbrush, wipe with alcohol, then apply horticultural oil monthly until gone.
