What's eating my hatiora salicornioides?

Hatiora salicornioides, the drunkard's dream or bottle cactus grown indoors, is a segment-jointed epiphytic cactus most threatened by mealybugs at its joints and fungus gnats in humid indoor conditions. Spider mites may attack in very dry air. Its epiphytic nature means root rot from overwet mix is as damaging as any insect pest.

White woolly clusters form at stem segment joints; affected segments yellow, shrivel, and drop. Remove with alcohol swabs; apply neem oil spray to all joints and stems, repeating every two weeks.

Larvae feed on fine roots and organic matter in humid mix; adults are visible around the soil surface. Allow top half of mix to dry between waterings; use Bti (mosquito dunks) drench and yellow sticky traps.

Tiny pale speckling on segments; fine webbing visible when infestation is severe in dry heated rooms. Mist segments regularly to raise humidity; spray with neem oil or insecticidal soap and isolate the plant.
