What's eating my hachiya persimmon?

Hachiya Persimmon (Diospyros kaki 'Hachiya') shares the pest profile of other Oriental persimmon cultivars. Scale insects are the most consistent problem, colonizing bark and weakening tree vigor. Birds target the fruit as it softens and becomes astringent-free after frost. Persimmon psylla and mealybugs can also occur in warm climates.

Flat armored or soft scales crust on branches; affected wood yellows and may die back; overall tree vigor declines over successive seasons. Spray dormant horticultural oil in late winter before bud break; follow up with insecticidal soap when crawlers emerge in spring; remove heavily infested limbs.

Soft, ripe Hachiya fruit — especially after frost softens it — is pecked open; large flocks can strip a tree rapidly in autumn. Net trees while fruit is still firm; use visual deterrents (reflective tape, hawk decoys) before fruit softens; harvest fully ripe fruit promptly or leave a sacrificial share for wildlife.
