What's eating my grape 'reliance'?

Grape 'Reliance' is a seedless red table grape (Vitis labrusca type) popular in home gardens. Its main pests are grape berry moth in clusters, Japanese beetle defoliating leaves, spotted wing drosophila in ripe fruit, and birds competing for the entire crop at harvest. Japanese beetle is a notoriously damaging annual pest on Vitis labrusca types.

Lace-skeletonised leaves from June–August; mass aggregation on vines; severe defoliation. Hand-pick in early morning; apply pyrethroid or carbaryl during peak flight. Do not hang pheromone traps near the vine — they increase local beetle density.

Frass-webbed clusters; bore holes in berries allow Botrytis entry; significant crop loss. Monitor with pheromone traps from bloom; apply Bt or spinosad timed to egg-hatch using local degree-day models.

Whole clusters stripped at ripening; particularly damaging on seedless varieties which ripen uniformly. Enclose fruiting vines in bird netting at veraison; individually bag clusters with paper or mesh bags for small plantings.

Ripe berries collapse inward with internal larvae; crop deteriorates rapidly. Harvest promptly; apply spinosad if SWD adults are caught in traps before full ripeness.
