What's eating my grape 'himrod'?

Grape 'Himrod' is a white seedless table grape (Vitis vinifera × labrusca) with thin skin, making it especially vulnerable to spotted wing drosophila at ripening and to bird predation. Japanese beetle skeletonises leaves, and grape berry moth targets clusters. The thin berry skin makes SWD and bird damage the standout threats at harvest.

Thin-skinned berries collapse with maggots inside; rapid secondary Botrytis in the cluster. Monitor with traps from veraison; apply spinosad at first catch; harvest at first full ripeness without delay. Remove any split or soft berries immediately.

Foliage skeletonised between veins mid-summer; repeated attacks weaken fruit sugar accumulation. Hand-pick daily in peak season; pyrethroid spray at economic threshold. Never place pheromone bag-traps near the planting.

Webbed, frass-filled clusters; bored berries rot before harvest. Degree-day timed Bt or spinosad sprays at each generation. Sanitation: remove old bark, clip and dispose of mummified clusters.

Entire clusters consumed at ripening; white grapes lack the visual warning colouration that deters some birds. Install bird netting at veraison; reflective tape or predator decoys offer only short-term deterrence.
