What's eating my gevuina?

Gevuina avellana (Chilean hazelnut) is a relatively pest-resistant tree but can suffer from scale insects, aphids, and root-rot pathogens in garden settings. The most serious threat is Phytophthora root rot, especially in poorly drained soils. Sap-sucking insects are opportunistic on stressed trees and treatable with horticultural oil.

Sudden wilting and dieback of branches; trees can collapse abruptly. Roots show dark decay when inspected. Ensure sharp drainage; avoid waterlogged soils. No chemical cure once established — prevention through site selection is critical. Remove and destroy infected plants.

Sticky honeydew on leaves and stems; yellow patches or sooty mould. Colonies of flat, waxy bumps on bark and shoots. Apply horticultural oil or neem oil in late winter/spring when crawlers are active. Encourage natural predators such as ladybirds.

Distorted, curling new growth; sticky honeydew residue on leaves attracting ants and sooty mould. Knock off with a strong water jet. Apply insecticidal soap or neem oil for heavy infestations. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser that promotes soft growth.
