What's eating my fringed coreopsis?

Fringed Coreopsis is relatively pest-resistant but aphids and leafhoppers are the most common threats, causing stunted growth and distorted foliage. Slugs and snails may graze young plants in moist conditions. Deer occasionally browse the foliage but generally find it unappealing. Good air circulation and healthy soil are the best defenses.

Clusters of soft-bodied insects on new growth; sticky honeydew residue and curled, distorted leaves. Knock off with a strong water spray; apply insecticidal soap or neem oil. Encourage ladybugs and lacewings.

Pale stippling or white flecking on leaves as insects pierce and suck plant sap; plants may look bleached. Remove weeds nearby that harbor populations; use row covers on young plants; apply pyrethrin if severe.

Ragged holes in leaves and stems of young plants, especially after rain; silvery slime trails present. Hand-pick at night; use iron phosphate slug bait around plants; reduce mulch depth near crowns.
