What's eating my european columbine?

European Columbine is reliably afflicted by columbine leaf miners — their serpentine tunnels appear on almost every plant by early summer. Aphids colonize tender stems, sawfly larvae can rapidly defoliate plants, and slugs target emerging growth in spring. In UK gardens, vine weevil root damage is also worth watching.

Winding pale trails inside leaves visible from above; heavy infestations cause entire leaves to brown and die early. Remove affected leaves and bin them; cut the whole plant to the ground after bloom for a clean flush of foliage.

Colonies of small soft-bodied insects on flower stalks and new shoots cause curling, honeydew deposits, and sooty mold. Insecticidal soap or neem oil spray; blast off with a water jet; rely on ladybugs and lacewings as natural predators.

Green larvae skeletonize or completely consume leaf tissue; defoliation can happen fast in large colonies. Inspect undersides of leaves weekly; hand-pick larvae; spray with insecticidal soap where colonies are dense.

Notched leaf margins from adult feeding (minor); creamy grubs consume roots and crowns causing sudden plant collapse, especially in containers. Apply nematode biological control (Steinernema kraussei) to moist compost in late summer or autumn; check root balls when dividing plants.
