What's eating my echinocereus engelmannii?

Echinocereus engelmannii (Engelmann's hedgehog cactus) faces its biggest threat from cochineal scale, which hides beneath white wax on the ribs. Rodents and jackrabbits gnaw stems at ground level, particularly in arid winters. Spider mites flare in prolonged heat. Its stout spines deter most large herbivores.
