What's eating my don juan rose?

Don Juan is a vigorous climbing rose with deep-red, fragrant blooms that strongly attract Japanese beetles in the US. Aphids colonise new canes readily. Rose sawfly larvae defoliate in late spring. The climbing habit exposes foliage widely. Deer may browse lower canes. Japanese beetles are the dominant summer threat in North America.

Adults skeletonize foliage and consume petals heavily during summer, drawn by the deep fragrance. Hand-pick into soapy water each morning; apply neem oil spray every 7 days; use milky spore for grub control in lawn.

Colonies on new cane tips and flower buds produce sticky honeydew and weaken new growth. Dislodge with strong water spray; apply insecticidal soap; attract aphid predators with companion planting.

Larvae skeletonize leaf undersides along the climbing canes, leaving brown papery patches. Check the undersides of leaves weekly in late spring; hand-pick larvae; spray spinosad if widespread.

Lower canes and new shoots browsed, especially in autumn and early winter. Install fencing or wrap lower canes in wire mesh; apply deer-repellent spray to accessible growth.
