What's eating my dianthus gratianopolitanus 'firewitch'?

Dianthus gratianopolitanus 'Firewitch' (Cheddar pink) is robust and generally trouble-free. Aphids are the most likely pest, occasionally massing on stems and flower buds. Slugs can damage the low cushion of foliage, and thrips may distort flowers in hot spells. No serious pest pressure under normal garden conditions.

Colonies on flower stems and new growth; sticky honeydew deposits, curled leaves, and weakened buds. Spray with a strong jet of water or insecticidal soap solution. Repeat weekly. Avoid excessive nitrogen fertiliser, which drives lush growth aphids prefer.

Jagged holes in the low cushion of grey-green foliage; seedlings and young divisions most at risk after rain. Surround plants with sharp grit. Use iron phosphate pellets; hand-pick after dark. Good drainage reduces slug habitat.

Fine silver-white streaks across petals; buds may fail to open fully in hot, dry summers. Remove and dispose of affected flower stems. Apply insecticidal soap or neem oil spray in the evening. Maintain soil moisture to limit heat stress.
