What's eating my detroit dark red beetroot?

Detroit Dark Red beetroot is most troubled by beet leaf miner, whose larvae tunnel between leaf layers and disrupt photosynthesis. Aphids cluster on young leaves and can vector viruses, while slugs and snails damage seedlings and roots. Birds, particularly pigeons, pull up seedlings or peck at exposed roots.

Larvae tunnel inside leaves, creating blotchy, papery brown mines; heavy infestations reduce leaf area and slow root development. Cover with insect-proof mesh (1.3 mm); remove and destroy mined leaves; the RHS notes no pesticide is approved against the larvae once inside leaf tissue.

Black clusters on young foliage and growing tips; honeydew and sooty mould; virus transmission reduces yield. Encourage natural enemies; pinch out colony centres; insecticidal soap or neem oil for heavy infestations.
