What's eating my daikon radish?

Daikon's large size and long growing season make it more susceptible than small radishes. Flea beetles riddle young leaves, cabbage root fly targets the long taproot, and aphids and harlequin bugs (in warmer climates) can colonise later. Deer will browse foliage where present. Consistent row cover from sowing is the best single defence.

Characteristic shot-hole damage to leaves; heavy early-season attacks weaken plants before the large root can develop. Sow under insect-proof mesh. Avoid sowing in hot, dry conditions when flea beetles are most active. Reflective mulches can reduce landing rates.

Larvae tunnel along the entire length of the long taproot, causing rot and making roots unmarketable or inedible. Apply brassica collars; use mesh barriers. Avoid planting in ground that held brassicas or other radishes the previous season.

Waxy grey-green colonies on leaves and growing points; leaves curl and yellow; honeydew attracts ants and sooty mould. Squash small colonies by hand. Use insecticidal soap spray. Remove plant debris promptly after harvest to eliminate overwintering eggs.

Leaves stripped or entire plants pulled from ground, particularly in autumn when daikon roots are visible at the soil surface. Deer fencing or motion-activated deterrents where deer pressure is high. Harvest promptly once roots are mature rather than leaving them in the ground.
