What's eating my curly pondweed?

Curly Pondweed faces its main biological pressure from aquatic insects — leaf beetle larvae, shore fly larvae (Hydrellia), and midge larvae mine foliage and stems. Waterfowl graze it readily. In garden ponds, carp and goldfish will eat it. Water quality and flow management are the best defence.

Larvae and adults feed on leaf tissue, creating ragged holes and chewed margins on submerged and emergent leaves. Maintain healthy water quality; remove heavily infested stems by hand. Avoid chemical control in pond water — natural aquatic predators limit outbreaks.

Blotch mines and boring into foliage; affected sections turn pale or translucent. Remove worst-affected leaves; good water circulation discourages larval build-up. No practical chemical control in aquatic settings.

Waterfowl graze leaves heavily; carp consume and uproot entire plants. Use weighted baskets with gravel topping; protect new plantings with wire mesh. Avoid stocking herbivorous fish in planted ponds.
