What's eating my coconut palm?

Coconut Palm (Cocos nucifera) faces an array of serious outdoor tropical pests. The rhinoceros beetle bores into crowns, the coconut mite (Aceria guerreronis) devastates fruit, and red palm weevil kills trees outright. Scale insects and the coconut leaf beetle (Brontispa longissima) are widespread. The coconut mite is the primary economic pest globally.

Brown triangular lesions under the husk of young coconuts; shriveled, unmarketable fruit. Apply acaricides (e.g., wettable sulfur) to the crown and developing nuts; release predatory mites (Neoseiulus spp.) as biocontrol.

V-shaped cuts in emerging fronds; crown boring by adults can destroy the growing point. Use Oryctes nudivirus (OrNV) biocontrol; set up pheromone traps; apply Metarhizium fungus to breeding sites (rotting logs, compost).

Adults and larvae scrape and feed inside unfurled spear leaves, causing brown streaking and reduced vigor. Introduce parasitoid wasps (Asecodes hispinarum) for biological control; apply systemic insecticide to the crown for severe infestations.
