What's eating my china fir?

China Fir has few serious pests in temperate garden settings. Scale insects may colonise stems, and spider mites can cause needle bronzing in hot, dry summers. In its native Chinese range, the moth Polychrosis cunninhamiacola and longhorned cerambycid beetles are recorded, but these are not present in UK or US gardens.

Small armoured bumps on stems and needles; weakened growth and yellowing foliage; sticky honeydew may attract sooty mould. Apply horticultural oil or systemic neonicotinoid drench in spring when crawlers are active; remove heavily infested shoots.

Fine bronzing or speckling on needles; webbing visible in hot, dry weather; foliage loses colour and may drop. Spray with forceful water jets to dislodge mites; apply miticide (e.g., abamectin) if populations build; ensure adequate irrigation to reduce stress.

Larvae destroy terminal buds causing multi-leader forking and stunted height growth; only a threat in native range. Not a concern outside China; if suspected on recently imported material, contact plant health authorities immediately.
