What's eating my carding mill rose?

Carding Mill, an apricot-toned English shrub rose, is susceptible to aphids on its prolific new growth and to Japanese beetles skeletonizing blooms in the US. Rose sawfly larvae defoliate in late spring. Deer browse canes in rural gardens. Its moderate disease resistance helps, but pest vigilance is still required.

Colonies on new shoots and bud bases cause sticky honeydew deposits and distorted growth. Blast with water; insecticidal soap or neem oil; attract ladybirds with companion flowers.

Adults skeletonize leaves and eat petals in mid-summer, gathering in numbers on open blooms. Hand-pick into soapy water; apply neem oil as feeding deterrent; milky spore for lawn grub control.

Larvae strip leaflet tissue from undersides, leaving pale then brown papery windows. Hand-pick eggs and larvae from leaf undersides; apply spinosad spray in the evening if needed.

Canes stripped or snapped at browse height, especially in autumn and winter. Install physical fencing; spray commercial deer repellent; grow thorny companion shrubs as barriers.
