What's eating my cape gooseberry?

Cape gooseberry is attacked by aphids, whitefly, and flea beetles outdoors, while caterpillars and spider mites can also cause damage. The papery husk protects the fruit somewhat, but foliage and stems are vulnerable. Aphids and whitefly are the most persistent threats; inspect undersides of leaves regularly and act early.

Clusters of soft insects on shoot tips and leaf undersides cause curled, distorted foliage and sticky honeydew. Blast off with a strong water jet; apply insecticidal soap or neem oil spray. Encourage ladybirds and lacewings.

Clouds of tiny white flies rise when foliage is disturbed; nymphs suck sap, causing yellowing and sooty mould. Use yellow sticky traps to monitor; spray with insecticidal soap or pyrethrin in the evening. Remove heavily infested leaves.

Small, round shot-holes peppered across leaves, especially on seedlings and young plants. Cover young plants with fine insect mesh; apply diatomaceous earth around the base; use pyrethrin spray if severe.

Large irregular holes in leaves and stems; dark frass visible nearby; fruits may be bored into. Hand-pick and destroy; apply Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) spray targeting young larvae. Encourage parasitic wasps.
