What's eating my brunnera macrophylla?

Brunnera macrophylla (Siberian bugloss) is a robust shade perennial most troubled by slugs and snails, which shred its large heart-shaped leaves. Vine weevil grubs damage roots in containers. Aphids visit spring flower stems. Deer may graze it in woodland garden settings but the plant generally regrows vigorously from its tough rhizome.

Holes and ragged edges through the broad leaves; most severe in wet springs in shaded, moist beds. Iron phosphate pellets; grit mulch; beer traps; hand-picking after rain; encourage natural predators.

Adult weevils notch leaf margins; larvae sever roots underground causing sudden wilting. Apply biological nematode controls in late summer; use vine weevil compost in containers.
