What's eating my clivia 'belgian hybrid'?

Clivia 'Belgian Hybrid' (Clivia miniata) is a long-lived houseplant most troubled by mealybugs, which cluster in the tight leaf bases and roots. Scale insects and spider mites also attack. As a semi-outdoor plant in mild climates, slugs can damage emerging flower stems. Inspect the crowded bulb base regularly — pests hide deep between the strap leaves.

White cottony masses packed between the thick leaf bases and at the root crown; leaves yellow and flower production drops. Remove the plant from its pot, manually clean root mealybugs with a cotton bud soaked in isopropyl alcohol, repot in fresh mix, and spray foliage with neem oil weekly for a month.

Hard brown or soft waxy bumps on leaf undersides and mid-ribs; honeydew and sooty mould on the glossy foliage. Scrape off scales with a soft toothbrush; apply horticultural oil or neem solution to all leaf surfaces; repeat fortnightly for six weeks.

Fine yellow stippling on leaf surfaces and webbing on undersides, usually in warm dry conditions indoors. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth, increase humidity, and spray with insecticidal soap every five to seven days for three treatments.

Irregular ragged holes in soft new growth and emerging flower stems, most common when plants are kept outdoors or in a cool greenhouse. Remove slugs by hand at night; apply copper tape around pots; use a pet-safe iron phosphate slug bait around the base of outdoor-placed plants.
