What's eating my begonia 'barkos'?

Begonia × hiemalis 'Barkos' (Rieger begonia) is primarily a houseplant or cool conservatory plant. Its worst threats indoors are mealybugs sheltering in stem joints and powdery mildew — though mildew is a disease, pests include spider mites in dry rooms, aphids on buds, and vine weevil if kept in outdoor containers.

White cottony wax masses in leaf axils and stem joints; leaves yellow and drop; honeydew accumulates. Dab colonies with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab; spray entire plant with insecticidal soap or neem oil; repeat weekly.

Fine pale stippling on upper leaf surface; fine webbing under leaves in dry, warm conditions. Raise humidity; spray forcefully with water; apply neem oil or insecticidal soap weekly until gone.

Soft green or black insects on buds and new shoots; sticky, distorted growth. Remove by hand or with a damp cloth; treat with insecticidal soap spray indoors.
