What's eating my avalanche feather reed grass?

Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Avalanche' has no serious pest or disease problems under normal garden conditions. Rust is the one threat worth watching during extended wet weather. Aphids can appear on new growth in spring but rarely cause lasting harm. Deer and rabbits generally leave this grass alone.

Orange-brown powdery pustules on upper and lower leaf surfaces; affected blades may yellow and wither during persistently damp conditions. Site in full sun with good airflow; water at soil level. Cut out badly infected foliage. Apply sulfur-based fungicide preventively if rust is a recurring problem in your garden.

Soft green or black insects congregating on emerging shoots; honeydew deposit may attract sooty mould. Blast off with water or spray with insecticidal soap. Encourage beneficial insects such as lacewings and ladybirds. Rarely requires chemical control.
