What's eating my arisaema elephas?

Arisaema elephas (elephant cobra lily) is a high-altitude Himalayan woodland aroid. Slugs are its chief threat, shredding the spathe on emergence. Aphids can colonize tender stems in spring, and vine weevil grubs may damage the corm. Plants grown in boggy shade attract more slug pressure.

Spathe and petioles chewed or stripped; slime trails left across soil surface near plant base. Apply iron-phosphate pellets; use fine grit mulch to deter slugs; hand-pick after dark or in wet weather.

Sticky, distorted new growth; dense colonies on stems and undersides of leaflets. Dislodge with a strong water spray; treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil; repeat weekly as needed.

Corm hollowed by white grubs underground; adult beetles leave characteristic notches on leaf edges. Drench with Steinernema kraussei nematodes in late summer; check corms annually when dividing.
