What's eating my anubias barteri var. nana?

Anubias nana is a slow-growing aquarium plant whose biggest enemy is green spot algae colonizing its long-lived leaves. Snails and herbivorous fish can graze or uproot it. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) may smother it in low-flow tanks. Keeping nutrients balanced and flow adequate prevents most issues.

Hard green discs on older leaves that cannot be wiped off; leaves look speckled and lose visual appeal over time. Maintain phosphate 0.5–1 ppm; add nerite snails or otocinclus; manually remove badly affected leaves; apply liquid carbon spot treatment.

Slimy blue-green or purple-brown film smothers leaves and substrate, reducing light and causing leaf death underneath. Increase flow and surface agitation; blackout tank for 3 days; dose with erythromycin (where legal) as a last resort; resolve underlying nutrient imbalance.

Holes eaten in leaves; soft new growth targeted first; populations explode with excess feeding. Introduce assassin snails; reduce overfeeding; manual removal; use a snail trap baited with vegetable matter.
