What's eating my king anthurium?

King Anthurium is a striking tropical aroid kept indoors in high humidity, making it prone to thrips and spider mites that damage the enormous rippled leaves. Mealybugs hide in the spathe bases and new-leaf sheaths. Scale insects also appear. Any pest damage on the dramatic foliage is immediately visible and hard to ignore.

Silver or gray streaking and scarring on new leaves as they unfurl from the sheath, often causing permanent distortion of the large leaf blade. Quarantine immediately; remove infested sheaths; spray spinosad or insecticidal soap every 5 days for 3 treatments. Yellow sticky traps confirm presence.

Tiny pale speckles across the leaf surface giving a dusty appearance; faint webbing at the base of the long petioles in dry conditions. Raise humidity to 70%+; shower the foliage to dislodge mites; treat with neem oil spray weekly. Heated dry indoor air is the main trigger.

White waxy tufts at the base of petioles and inside developing leaf sheaths; leaves yellow and new growth emerges stunted or distorted. Remove with alcohol swabs; spray insecticidal soap targeting all sheath crevices. Check roots for root mealybugs and drench with neem if found.

Hard brown or tan bumps along the prominent leaf veins and petioles; honeydew deposit and sooty mold on the broad leaf surface. Scrape off with a soft toothbrush; apply horticultural oil to all surfaces and repeat every 2 weeks until no new scales appear.
