What's eating my annual phlox?

Annual Phlox (Phlox drummondii) is most commonly attacked by spider mites and aphids, both of which feed on sap and weaken plants during dry spells. Thrips distort petals and buds. Because this is an annual, rapid population build-up matters more — monitor from seedling stage and act early with insecticidal soap to protect the short growing season.

Tiny dots of stippling on leaves, fine webs on undersides; leaves turn bronze or yellow and plants look generally unhealthy. Spray insecticidal soap or neem oil every 3–5 days for two weeks; ensure adequate watering as dry conditions strongly promote mite outbreaks.

Clusters on leaves, stems, and buds cause curled, yellowed foliage, stunted growth, and honeydew-fuelled sooty mould. Blast off daily with a strong water jet; apply insecticidal soap or neem oil for persistent infestations; attract hoverflies with companion flowers.

Silvery streaking and distortion on petals and buds; flowers may fail to open or appear papery and discoloured. Remove and bin heavily infested flowers; spray with insecticidal soap or spinosad; blue sticky traps help monitor levels.
