What's eating my achimenes 'cascade violet night'?

Achimenes 'Cascade Violet Night' is a trailing indoor tuberous plant valued for its deep violet cascading flowers. Aphids are the most common seasonal pest on its soft stems and buds. Spider mites can cause rapid deterioration in low-humidity conditions. Like all Achimenes, pest pressure ceases when the plant goes dormant each winter.

Colonies on shoot tips and buds; honeydew drips onto lower leaves and trailing stems; buds may brown and drop without opening. Wash off with a gentle water spray or wipe with a damp cloth. Apply insecticidal soap every 5–7 days. Avoid nitrogen-heavy liquid feeds during active growth as they attract aphids.

Speckled, faded foliage with a dull, dusty appearance; silky webbing under leaves and at stem tips; worst in summer heat or near radiators. Increase ambient humidity. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil spray weekly, coating undersides thoroughly. Prune out and destroy heavily affected trailing stems.

Silver-scarred petals and leaf surfaces — especially noticeable against the deep violet blooms; tiny dark droppings on undersides of leaves; flowers may distort. Remove affected blooms promptly. Apply spinosad or insecticidal soap spray weekly. Place blue sticky traps near the hanging basket to monitor and reduce adult thrip numbers.
