What's eating my abelia 'kaleidoscope'?

Abelia 'Kaleidoscope' is generally pest-free, but its colourful foliage can attract aphids on new growth, spider mites in hot dry spells, and occasional scale on stems. Regular monitoring and good air circulation around the plant's compact mound is usually all that is needed.

Colonies on new shoot tips producing sticky honeydew; leaves may curl and growth becomes distorted. Knock off with a strong water spray; insecticidal soap or neem oil for persistent infestations.

Fine silvery stippling on leaves during hot, dry conditions; leaves may yellow and drop early. Hose foliage down regularly to raise humidity; use horticultural soap spray or predatory mites.

Immobile waxy bumps on stems sapping plant vigour; honeydew encourages sooty mould. Rub off with a soft brush; apply horticultural oil in late winter or when crawlers are active.
