How to prune pistachio
Train young trees to 3–5 scaffold branches in the first growing season, shortening scaffolds in June to encourage side branching. On mature trees, thin inward-growing and crossing wood to maintain light penetration; remove no more than 15% of the crown per season.
Pistachio (Pistacia vera) requires structural training in its early years and moderate annual maintenance thereafter. Prune to an open-vase form in late winter. Established trees need only light annual thinning — removing 10–15% of the crown keeps yields high; removing more than 30% increases the proportion of closed (blank) nuts, directly cutting into harvest quality.
