About your monstera deliciosa

Tropical aroid. Water when top inch of soil is dry.

How we calculated this: Monstera deliciosa base interval: 7 days · Pot multiplier (m): ×1 · Light multiplier (medium): ×1 · Season multiplier (spring): ×1.

This is a starting point — your specific plant in your specific home may need a slightly different schedule. Always check the soil before watering. If the top inch is wet, wait another 2-3 days and check again.

How this calculator works

The interval is calculated as: species_base × pot_factor × light_factor × season_factor.

Species base intervalscome from horticultural extension service recommendations + Growli's own species care guides (snake plant 14 days, pothos 7 days, basil 2 days, etc.). They represent a healthy plant in a medium pot, medium indirect light, in spring.

Multipliers shift the interval based on your conditions. Small pots dry out fast (×0.55). Low light slows water use (×1.5). Summer heat speeds it up (×0.8). Winter dormancy slows it dramatically (×1.6).

What this does NOT capture:your home's humidity, your specific plant's recent history (was it just repotted? recovering from overwatering?), your local climate spikes (heatwaves shorten intervals). For those, the Growli app updates daily based on your specific garden — the calculator gives you a starting point, not a permanent schedule.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the watering calculator?

It's a starting point, not a verdict. The interval is calculated from species averages adjusted for pot size, light, and season. Real conditions vary — always check soil moisture before watering. A finger pushed 2 inches into the soil tells you more than any calculator.

Why is my plant not in the dropdown?

I cover the 25+ most-asked-about plants. If your species isn't listed, pick 'generic houseplant' or the closest equivalent (e.g. for a peperomia not listed, choose 'peperomia'). For a free, deeper match to your specific plant + climate, add it to the Growli app.

How does pot size affect watering?

Small pots dry out fast — a 4-inch pot can need watering 50-70% more often than a 10-inch pot of the same plant. Container surface area, depth, and material all matter, but pot size is the biggest single factor.

Should I really water less in winter?

Yes — most houseplants use 50-70% less water in winter compared to summer because light is dimmer and growth slows. Calendar-based watering in winter is the #1 cause of overwatering. Cut your usual frequency by half from October through March.

How is this different from setting a reminder in Growli?

The calculator gives you one starting interval. The Growli app adjusts continuously — it factors in actual weather (a heatwave shortens the interval), responds to photos you upload, and lets you log when you actually watered. Use this calculator as a one-shot answer; use the app for ongoing care.
