Pruning zz plant — FAQ
When should I prune zz plant?
Any time of year. Cut damaged or yellowed stalks at the soil surface using clean, sharp scissors or shears. Do not cut healthy stems partway, as ZZ plant does not branch from cut points. Wear gloves — the sap is a mild skin irritant.
How often does zz plant need pruning?
Rarely — only when dead or damaged stems appear. ZZ plant requires very little pruning. Remove individual stalks that yellow or die by cutting them at the soil level. The plant grows slowly from rhizomes underground, so there is no benefit to cutting healthy stems — they will not branch from a mid-stalk cut. Leave healthy growth alone and prune only to remove damage.
