Pruning yucca — FAQ
When should I prune yucca?
Spring or summer; remove dead lower leaves year-round as needed. Pull dead lower leaves downward sharply — they often detach cleanly. For stubborn ones, cut close to the trunk. To control a very overgrown specimen, cut the cane to the desired height; the stump will sprout new growth over several months.
How often does yucca need pruning?
Rarely; cosmetic tidy once a year is usually all that is needed. Yucca needs very little routine pruning. Remove brown leaf tips or whole dead lower leaves by pulling or cutting them cleanly at the trunk. Avoid cutting into the green rosette of living leaves — yuccas grow from a central terminal bud and cutting it stops that stem's upward growth permanently.
