Late winter or early dry season, before the main growing flush. Prune all main stems back to a low framework of 30–60 cm (12–24 in). Remove dead, twiggy, or crossing growth entirely. After pruning, water well and apply a balanced fertilizer to encourage strong regrowth. The new stems produced after cutting carry the most striking bract colour.

Mussaenda luteola is a tropical shrub producing yellow bracts and benefits from the same hard annual pruning used for its Mussaenda relatives. Cut back hard in late winter or the dry season to stimulate the vigorous new growth on which colourful bracts appear. Without regular hard pruning the plant becomes lanky and bract production declines.
