Pruning vriesea — FAQ
When should I prune vriesea?
Remove the spent flower spike once it is fully brown and dry. Cut the spent flower spike at its base using clean, sharp scissors or a knife. Do not remove the mother rosette until the pups growing at its base are at least one-third the size of the parent. Then separate pups with a clean cut.
How often does vriesea need pruning?
Once per plant life cycle — one spike removal, then pup separation. Vriesea (a bromeliad) needs almost no pruning. The central rosette blooms once and then dies — this is natural, not a sign of poor care. Once the flower spike has fully faded, cut it at the base. Leave the dying mother rosette in place until offsets (pups) are large enough to separate.
