How to prune veilchenblau rose

Immediately after flowering (typically July in the UK; June–July in the US). Remove two or three of the oldest, woodiest canes at or near ground level each year. Shorten remaining laterals to 3–4 leaves. Train long new canes from the base into the available support space.

Annually after flowering. Veilchenblau is a vigorous once-flowering rambler that blooms only on the previous year's wood. Prune immediately after its single summer flush — late-winter pruning removes all the flower buds. The aim is to cut out a proportion of the oldest canes and tie in strong new growth for next year's display.
