How to prune thimble cactus

Spring — when separating or thinning offsets. Use tongs or folded paper to gently pluck loose offsets away from the mother plant. Allow all cut or detached surfaces to callous in open air for 2–3 days before potting.

As needed — offsets self-detach; thin clusters annually in spring if desired. Thimble Cactus (Mammillaria gracilis) produces many small offsets that readily detach. No pruning is needed on the main stems. Remove or thin crowded offsets in spring if the pot becomes very dense. Handle with tongs — the clusters break apart easily. Detached offsets propagate effortlessly in dry cactus mix.
