How to prune the generous gardener rose

Late autumn to late winter (November–February); tie in new growth throughout the growing season. Fan long main canes out horizontally and tie in securely. Shorten flowering side shoots by approximately half. On mature plants, remove one or two of the oldest main canes at the base each year to encourage vigorous new replacement growth.

Annually (main prune and tie-in in late autumn–winter; ongoing tying of new shoots in season). The Generous Gardener is a vigorous English climbing rose reaching up to 4–5 m. As a climber it needs annual pruning and ongoing training to flower well from base to tip. Tie long canes horizontally or at 45 degrees across wires or trellis — horizontal training is the key technique that triggers flowering side shoots along the full length of each cane.
