When should I prune sweetcorn?
If removing suckers, do so early in the season when they are small. If you choose to remove basal tillers, snap them off cleanly at soil level when they are 10–15 cm tall. Do not remove leaves — they photosynthesize and support cob fill. No other pruning is needed.
How often does sweetcorn need pruning?
Rarely; tiller removal once early in the season if needed. Sweetcorn (Zea mays) does not need pruning in the traditional sense. Some growers remove suckers (tillers) from the base, but research shows this rarely improves yield and can stress the plant. Remove suckers only if severely crowded. Focus on correct spacing and watering rather than pruning to maximize cobs.
