Pruning strawberries — FAQ
When should I prune strawberries?
Runner removal: June–August. Post-fruiting renovation: July–August (immediately after harvest). Snip runners at their point of origin with scissors or shears. For renovation, cut or strim all foliage back to 10 cm above the crown level, then remove debris and weed thoroughly. Do not cut into the crown itself. Feed and water after renovation to push new leaf growth.
How often does strawberries need pruning?
Runners: remove throughout summer. Full renovation: once per year after harvest. Strawberries need regular runner management and an annual tidy to stay productive. Cut off runners (long stolons) throughout summer unless you want new plants. After fruiting, cut back all old foliage to about 10 cm above the crown ('mowing' or 'renovating') to remove disease and encourage fresh growth before winter.
