Pruning spinach — FAQ
When should I prune spinach?
Harvest outer leaves continuously from when the plant reaches 10 cm (4 in). Snap or cut individual outer leaves at their base, leaving the central growing point intact to produce new leaves. Harvest every few days during peak growth.
How often does spinach need pruning?
Ongoing harvest; no structural pruning required. Spinach needs no pruning. Harvest outer leaves regularly at the stem base to keep the plant cropping — this is the only 'cut' needed. Once spinach bolts and sends up a central flower stalk in warm weather, leaf quality turns bitter and the plant's useful life ends. Pull and compost bolted plants; do not attempt to cut back and revive them.
