How to prune sonoran dioon

Any time of year when fronds are clearly dead or damaged. Use clean, sharp loppers to cut dead fronds as close to the caudex (trunk) as possible without cutting into it. Sterilise tools between plants.

Rarely — only as fronds die off naturally. Sonoran Dioon requires very little pruning. Native to dry Mexican hillsides, this cycad sheds old fronds naturally. Simply remove fully dead or damaged fronds by cutting at the base. Never cut healthy green fronds — on such a slow-growing plant, every frond contributes significantly to energy reserves.
