Pruning snapdragon — FAQ
When should I prune snapdragon?
Deadhead throughout the growing season; pinch young plants in early spring. Remove spent spikes by cutting back to a side shoot or leaf node to trigger branching. Pinch growing tips of young seedlings once they reach 4–6 inches to encourage a bushier, more floriferous plant rather than a single tall spike.
How often does snapdragon need pruning?
Deadhead every 1–2 weeks during bloom; pinch once at establishment. Snapdragons respond well to pruning. Deadhead spent flower spikes regularly to prolong blooming. When the main spike finishes, cut the entire stem back by about one-third to encourage branching and a second flush. In cooler climates where they overwinter, cut back hard in late autumn. Pinch young plants to promote bushy growth.
