Late spring to early summer. Make a single clean horizontal cut with a sterile serrated knife. Dust the cut surface with powdered sulfur or cinnamon to prevent fungal rot. Allow both cut ends to callous fully in a dry, airy spot for 1–2 weeks before rewetting the soil.
How often does silver torch cactus need pruning?
Rarely — only for height control or damage removal. Cleistocactus strausii forms tall, slender columns and needs very little pruning. If a stem outgrows the ceiling space, cut the column horizontally in late spring with a sterile serrated blade; the cut stump will often produce offsets at the base. Otherwise only remove visibly dead or rotted tissue.
