Light formative work in years 1–4; as needed on mature trees (every several years or less). Shellbark Hickory is a large, slow-growing nut tree with modest pruning needs. Young trees benefit from training to a single central leader and removal of narrow-angled crotches. Established trees need only occasional removal of dead, damaged, or crossing branches. This species recovers slowly from pruning wounds, so keep cuts minimal.
