Pruning shallot — FAQ
When should I prune shallot?
No pruning needed; harvest when tops die back in midsummer. Remove visibly diseased or collapsing outer leaves by cutting at the base. Allow all healthy green growth to die back naturally. Lift clumps when foliage is mostly straw-coloured and cure in an airy, dry spot for 2–3 weeks before storing.
How often does shallot need pruning?
Rarely; only for damage removal. Shallots need no pruning during the growing season. The green tops fuel bulb development and must be left intact. Do not cut the foliage. Remove any yellowing, rotting, or diseased leaves as needed. Harvest when the majority of top growth has died back and turned straw-coloured. Cure lifted bulbs in a warm, airy spot before storing.
